Introduction to the By-Name List

A By-Name List (BNL) is a real-time list of all known people experiencing homelessness in a community. This course provides a high-level overview of a BNL, what it is, and why it’s important to have one. You’ll learn how BNL data supports both coordinated access and prioritization at the person-level, and an understanding of homeless inflow and outflow at a system level. You’ll discover how this actionable data supports triage to services, system performance evaluation, and advocacy for the policies and actions necessary to end homelessness. This course is intended for anyone working in the homelessness response system.
